The primary function of the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is to monitor network devices. SNMP is a widely used protocol within network management that provides a framework for managing devices on IP networks, such as routers, switches, and servers. Through SNMP, network administrators can collect data from these devices, monitor their performance, and receive alerts regarding issues or changes in status.

This monitoring capability is essential for maintaining network health, troubleshooting problems, and ensuring optimal performance. SNMP allows for the centralized management of networks, enabling administrators to observe metrics like bandwidth usage, error rates, and device uptime, thereby facilitating timely responses to network events.

Other functions, such as initiating data transfer or connecting local area networks, fall outside the core purpose of SNMP. Likewise, while encryption of network traffic is vital for security, SNMP itself does not focus on this aspect; instead, it concentrates on network management and monitoring.
